Abstract

The number of war invalids and other individuals who were granted disability relief amounted to about 635 000 in the prewar Yugoslavia. They represented one of the main problems not only from the viewpoint of social policy but also from the viewpoint of economy and political circumstances. The majority (95%) of the war invalids and family members of killed soldiers who had to be supported were from the First World War. Almost one quarter of them did not have sufficient own financial and productive means for living. Neither financial support nor other privileges could adequately improve their difficult financial situation. They had no social security neither did they enjoy protection when their existence was endangered in some other way.
