The Initiative for an Independent Slovenian State Launched by Friar Kazimir Zakrajšek in August 1941

The paper deals with the initiative for the foundation of an independent Slovenian state, launched by Kazimir Zakrajšek, a Franciscan friar, in the United States, in August 1941. Although Zakrajšek claimed that the he had been instructed to launch this initiative by Marko Natlačen and Bishop Gregorij Rožman, it appears that he somewhat adapted these instructions to his own views. Furthermore, Zakrajšek was influenced by Anton Korošec's view on the prospects of the Slovenian nation, which foresaw, as one of the alternatives, the foundation of a federation of Central European countries.
