The Slovene Attitude towards the Common Central European Economic Area in the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century

In the paper, the author analyses the effect of inter-ethnic conflicts in the Habsburg Empire in the second half of the nineteenth century, with particular reference to German- Slovene conflicts, on the shaping of Slovene opinion regarding a possible customs union between Germany and the Habsburg Empire, the existing Austro-Hungarian union, and economic relations within the Austrian half of the Empire. He concludes that Slovene views on a common Central European economic area reflected aspirations for the political and ethnic re-arrangement of the area, rather than economic reality.
