Founding the Institute for the History of the Workers' Movement

The Institute for the History of the Workers' Movement in Ljubljana was founded without professional scientific cooperation. The task of the Institute was to increase the importance of Marxist doctrine in the humanities, by shifting the focus of historical research from distant historical periods, condemned as too "clerical" by Communist ideologists, to more recent. Its foundation in 1959 coincided with a straining of the relationship between the state authorities and the University of Ljubljana, especially the Faculty of Arts, leaving a peculiar political mark on the Institute. The Communist Party ideologists realized, soon after the foundation of the Institute, that it could not exist merely as a professional service for the political interests of the ruling party but had to abide by the rules governing any scientific institution.
