The Influence of the Great Depression on the Development of Trade in Slovenia
Keywords:
economy, the great depression, trade, Slovenia, CeljeAbstract
Slovene trade was somewhat less affected by the Great Depression than its industry. The crisis in Slovene trade is witnessed to by data on fluctuations in the number of commercial establishments; notable consequences of the Depression were a decline in newly founded commercial enterprises and, even more so, a significant reduction in the overall number of commercial establishments, as well as an increase in unemployment. Among those most affected were small retailers, the number of whose establishments dropped by 30 percent. The effects of the trade crisis in the 1930's were also felt by consumers; their purchasing power decreased, the prices of basic commodities rose and shortages of various kinds of goods began.
