Abstract

The paper deals with the Hungarian exodus in 1956 and 1957, with a particular focus on the refugees who fled to Yugoslavia (Slovenia). To give the widest possible presentation of the Hungarian refugee issue on Yugoslav soil, the author uses the UDBA (Yugoslav State Security Administration) documents, Slovene newspaper articles and foreign sources. Apart from giving general information on the refugees' number and date of arrival to Yugoslavia, particular attention is dedicated to the data on those refugees who crossed the Yugoslav-Hungarian border at the Slovene section. Within this framework, refugee camps in Slovenia, their organisation, daily life routine, visits by various refugee commissions and the final destination of 2,361 Hungarians who took refuge in Slovenia are presented in greater detail.
