This article presents the opinions, views and attitudes of residents and professionals towards the reforestation of the karst landscape after the disastrous forest fires of 2022, during which a large part of the Kras region on the Slovenian and Italian sides of the border burnt down. The fire became the starting point of a research project taking place at the University of Primorska, Faculty of Humanities (UP-FHŠ), as part of the research programme “Slovenia’s Living Spaces: past - present - future (LIVS)” (August – December 2023). The main research question addressed in the paper is whether there is a need for reforestation in the Kras region after the fires. The answer to the dilemma is based on the analysis of historical literature and ethnographic fieldwork data, considering the vernacular knowledge of the Kras population rooted in past representations of the region’s cultural landscape. The research shows that the abandonment of farming and the general lack of care for landscape management and conservation have contributed to the rapid spread of the 2022 fire over an extensive area. As the interviewees have repeatedly pointed out, the region’s karst landscape is nowadays largely abandoned, overgrown, and neglected.
