The author writes about the mental attitude of the Trieste middle classes during the period of transition from humanistic socialism to imperialistic nationalism. After the year 1918 the imperialism of the Italian nation united the interests of the financial and military powers. The world of the capital gravitated towards them; it sympathized with the fascists and looked favorably upon military interests.
