Abstract

The author deals with two types of internationalism in the Central European labour movement in the period leading up to World War I. The first was an example of a mechanical transfer of the Western European type and negated the political significance of the national problems in Austria. The second type, on the contrary, advocated the recognition of the national political structures as a prerequisite for international cooperation. The author firmly rejects the assertion that the policy of the Czech Social Democrats was nationalistic (an example of the second type) and that of the United Austro-German Party (an example of the first type) internationalist.
