Abstract

Jeseni leta 1912 je bil Trocki poslan z Dunaja na Balkan, da bi kot vojni dopisnik Kievskaje Misli pod psevdonimom Antid Oto poročal o balkanskih vojnih dogodkih. Njegova poročila so skupaj s še nekaterimi članki izšla v knjižni obliki v šestem med dvanajstimi zvezki njegovih nedokončanih zbranih del, izdanih med letoma 1923–1927. V angleščino so bila prevedena šele leta 1980 in z veliko hvale ponatisnjena leta 1993, v času vrhunca jugoslovanskih vojn, imenovanih »tretja balkanska vojna«, kot primarni vir za Balkan. Vojna poročila Trockega so bila razglašena za pravo mojstrovino in Isaac Deutscher je Trockega, ki naj bi mu »izkušnje natančnega vojnega dopisnika« pozneje koristile »kot utemeljitelju Rdeče armade «, primerjal z angleškim zgodovinarjem Edwardom Gibbonom, ki naj bi izkušnje, pridobljene, ko je bil stotnik grenadirjev v grofiji Hampshire, uporabil pri pisanju zgodovine rimskega cesarstva.
