Abstract

The complexity of a railway system demands an extremely well organized management. Relatively soon after the introduction of this new transportation mode in Europe, in 1830's, the railway network extended throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire, including the Slovenian territory. The construction of tracks and growing traffic were accompanied by the development and changes in the operational and administrative structure of the national railways. The railways management in Slovenia has always been influenced by current political changes. A large and complex system was set up for the management of railway traffic. The author shows how the railway management was organized by the state in the periods before the First World War, between the two World Wars, and after the Second World War.
