Abstract

In the paper, the author analyses the elections to the Provincial Assembly in Lower Styria during the term of Prime Minister Eduard Taaffe. On the basis of mainly newspaper material the course of the elections and the influence of German-Slovene relations on their execution are presented. The elections to the rural curia, which added tension to an already agitated political climate, are dealt with in greater detail. German endeavours to win at least one mandate in the curia where eight seats were held by Slovenes introduced significant dynamism in the pre-electoral campaign. The Slovenes, in their turn, attempted to penetrate the urban curia. The efforts on either side proved unsuccessful. Germans continued to dominate the urban curia while the rural curia remained firmly in Slovene hands.
