The “Friends of Nature” Tourist Society (Touristenverein “Die Naturfreunde”) in the Slovenian Territory

Awareness of the beneficial effects of outdoor physical activity and time spent in nature, as well as the need to protect the natural environment, are not merely features of the modern era but can be traced back more than a century. Among the key forerunners of contemporary environmental movements is the Naturfreunde association, which was founded with the aim of providing access to nature primarily for the lower-paid social classes. The association developed an extensive network of branches not only within the Austro-Hungarian Empire but also beyond its borders.
This paper focuses on the activities of the Slovenian branches of the association. Due to the limited availability of archival materials on the Jesenice branch, particular attention is given to the branch in Maribor.
