Abstract

In his monograph Zgodovina slovenske politične misli (The History of Slovenian Political Thought), Janko Prunk traces the development of Slovenian political thought from the Spring of Nations and the revolutionary period of 1848, when it came to life spurred by the demands from intellectuals, students, and clergy for a United Slovenia (an administratively and politically unified Slovenian territory within the Habsburg Monarchy), to the establishment of the sovereign and independent Republic of Slovenia in 1991. The author presents a series of historical contexts in which this development was embedded – a time that shaped and guided it – and analyses it in terms of all its ideological, political, and social characteristics and details. When considering Slovenia’s historical progress, it is clear that, in addition to the cultural and national thought that guided the Slovenian people on their path to national self-awareness and emancipation, the Slovenians also developed their political thought. The historical image of Slovenians is now even clearer and more comprehensive. The monograph makes a significant contribution to our knowledge of ourselves and to our understanding of the circumstances that have shaped the Slovenian people in the past and, to some extent, continue to do so today.
