Abstract

The author's aim is to present the activity of museum societies in Skofja Loka, Novo mesto, Murska Sobota and in Krško, which were formed between the two World Wars. Ambitious amateur historians have played an important role in forming Slovene cultural identity in the period between the two World Wars. With their repute, they evoke in local communities interest in cultural heritage, and contributed a great deal to popularisation of museum activity on Slovene territory. They have been facing a pretentious task - preserving the cultural past; their principal goal was opening of a local society museum.
