Abstract

According to written sources the Strmol castle furniture of the eighteenth century was, to a large degree, characteristically black-stained. Outstanding must have been a carved and gilt mirror and a bed with a red silk canopy; there was also a writing cabinet. None of these pieces survived. The present Baroque furniture found at the castle dates back to the nineteenth-thirties' ownership of Rado Hribar, a Ljubljana industrialist who turned the estate into his family's country seat, furnishing it with antique furniture bought on the market. Among case furniture are particularly interesting a black cabinet with blue-enamel plaques, presumably made in the late seventeenth, and a large veneered armoire with spiral pillars from the mid-eighteenth century.
