Abstract

The article presents the love letter in which Josip Furlan, a lawyer probationer from Ljubljana, proposed marriage to the daughter of the tradesman Josip Seunig from Ljubljana. The author compares Furlan’s love confession and marriage proposal with instructions for writing such letters and manuals on proper conduct, and as well describes the both families (the Furlan and the Seunig families). Furlan was namely a peasant’s son who by educating and studying at the Faculty of Law in Vienna became a townsman while his chosen bride and wife was a tradesman’s daughter. Six children were born in their marriage who all were and remained townspeople. However, Furlan remained strongly attached to his native place where he before World War I, had arranged himself a holiday home.
