Education system and teachers in White Carniola between 1860 and 1914

The paper offers an insight into the development of the education system from the beginning of the 1860s to World War I. Its primary aim is to draw attention to the role that schools and teachers had, firstly, in spreading the awareness about the necessity of elementary education and, secondly, that acquired knowledge, improved education, may also be put to good use to facilitate the improvement in general cultural, social and economic conditions. In the introduction the paper begins by providing a concise depiction of the beginnings of education in White Carniola before 1860 and then describes the development of education in the province as it took place after 1860, combined with the changes and progress achieved on the basis of the Public School Act of 1869. The paper also points to the significant influence of teachers’ rallies and the Teachers Association of White Carniola on the situation of the teaching profession, and alerts to a few notable teachers and other individuals in the field of education whose work and authority importantly contributed to the development of education, cultural life and economy in White Carniola from the early 1860s to World War I.
