Towards the history of delineating the border in White Carniola

Abstract

The paper seeks to offer an overview of the history of the Slovenian-Croatian border in White Carniola from the Middle Ages to the 20^th century. In the introduction the author begins by providing a theoretical definition of the problem concerning the historical research of the border and then describes the development which has led to the delineation of the present border on the basis of literature and sources. The present-day Slovenian-Croatian border in White Carniola was historically marked by two important phenomena: territorial changes and inconsistency of borders (the former led to discrepancies between various borders) and changes in the boundaries of settled borders (the latter often altered their nature). The present-day state border is the »successor« to the entire historical heritage.
