The Tržič Bistrica river basin almost entirely corresponds to the surface area of the Municipality of Tržič, with the municipal boundaries for the most part following the drainage divide. The river basin is marked by the diverse geological structure and mountainous terrain with big altitude differences and steep slopes. Most of the river basin is covered by forest, which has been subject to economic use for centuries. According to the meteorological data, the quantity of precipitation has been decreasing over the last decades in parallel to the increasing trend of high intensity precipitation events causing changes in the environment as well as posing a threat to people and infrastructure.
