Slovenci so po koncu francoskih Ilirskih provinc 1813. leta živeli vsi znotraj ene države. Kljub temu je bilo čutiti precejšnje razlike med kulturnim in političnim življenjem med onimi, ki so živeli znotraj starih habsburških teritorialno-političnih enot Štajerske, Koroške, Kranjske, Goriške, Istre in Trsta ter med onimi, ki so nekdaj živeli v Beneški republiki (Beneška Slovenija, Rezija) oziroma znotraj Ogrske (Prekmurje).
