Abstract

This paper investigates the society and economy of Slovenia in the interwar period and from the perspective of modernity. Particularly typical for this period was the intertwinement of dif- ferent levels of modernity since the rhythm of modernity was by no means uniform. The then Slovene society could be defined as a society of contrasts in which premodern and modern economic and social forms existed side by side, occasionally even without any contact. This was still a society torn between progressive modernization and the risks that such progress entailed.
