Abstract

Focusing on the period prior to the mid-20th century, this paper investigates the lives of children living in the mining region of Zasavje, the so-called black district. Their childhood years were defined by the local geographical and social circumstances of that period that had significantly influenced the formation of specific economic circumstances and diverse dwelling conditions during the period of industrializa- tion. As a result, they directly determined the social position of the local population that was also reflected in the daily life of the children of Zasavje, be it within their immediate family or in the wider social community, for example in kindergarten and in school.
