Development of the Kranj Coat of Arms
Abstract
The city of Kranj has had its coat of arms for more than 500 years. Traces regarding its origin and development are rather modest, since they are, for the most part, either lost or destroyed. All we are left with are rare pieces of evidence in the form of seals, stamps, drawings, and descriptions indicating the city symbol’s tattered journey through history. The paper aims to demonstrate the developmental path from the first known depiction of the coat of arms to its modern-day version, which deviates greatly from the established tradition. A suggested coat of arms that would represent the city of Kranj and its municipality according to heraldic rules, aesthetics, and colour combination is presented at the end of the article.
