Abstract

The paper deals with the establishment and operation of the field hospitals that were housed in the Škofja Loka Castle during World War I. The hospitals, which treated the wounded Austro-Hungarian soldiers, had an impact on the locals’ day-to-day lives, especially on the life and work of the Ursulines, who ran girls’ schools at the castle. As a result of the field hospital, which was housed in the castle between 1915 and 1918, and the soldiers who succumbed to wounds and diseases, a new cemetery was set up in Škofja Loka. After the end of the war, there were issues relating to the maintenance and upkeep of the military cemetery. Both the Škofja Loka Municipality and the Škofja Loka Group of Combatants attempted to resolve them.
