The first data on the activity of teachers in the Mura Region are available for the period 1544—1595. The record of the protestant inspection of 1627 corroborates that in the above-mentioned period there vvere protestant schools spread over the Slovene territory in Hungary. With the victory of counter-reformation there schools had to give place to catholic schools, but the evidence on the latter is available only in the inspection records from 1659 onvvards. Writers Temlin, Sever and Štefan Küzmič in particular wrote books for persecuted protestants for their use in church and school- the latter being allovved only in certaian places. Among the catholized Slovenes, too, the necessity for books arose and the vvriter vvho provided them vvas Mikloš Küzmič. With their vvriting the Slovene protestant and catholic writers put a firm foundation for Slovene schools in Hungary, and they could, therefore, preserve their national character also in the period of violent hungarization.
