Abstract

The author treats in the article the Slovene politics in the Goriška Region in the period between 1889—1899. The basic characteristic feature of this period is still the political unity of the Slovenes, although the clerical opposition is very powerful and, of course, the cause of the split in 1899, the consequcnce of which was the establishment of independent political parties of liberals and clericals. The struggle for an equal position of the Slovenes in a country with mixed nationalities represents the core of the Slovene political programme. In addition to the struggle for the rights of the use of Slovene language, for Slovene schools, and similar, the endeavours for strengthening of economic power are clearly evident. Results are not meagre, for Gorica is then beginning to become one of the important Slovene cultural and economic centres. Social democracy is becoming a new political factor, but it really begins to thrive in the twentieth century. A characteristic sign of this period are also Slovene — Italian national struggles.
