Abstract

By the settlement of the Northern Yugoslav frontier also Italy played a certain role. The main characteristic of her relation to the new Balkan neighbour was distrust. Her territorial demands within the zone of interest between the Adria and the Alps, where Yugoslavia could be competitive with Italy, were namely limited. In Paris Sonnino spoke against the Yugoslav state and supported Austrian interests. The mercantile circles of Triest demanded military intervention in Yugoslavia in case she vvould cut the traffic Iines between Triest and Austria. At that time Triest for the first time faced its limited hinterland and realized the real conditions of its annexation to Italy and of dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
