Cartels of Tournament 1652 in Ljubljana (from the National Museum Library)

Abstract

Among old printings kept by the National Museum Library in Ljubljana there are also original cartels (written challenges), not verified in historiography, to the tournament on February 17th, 1652, in Ljubljana. By means of a printed cartel »Europe« challenges three other continents to take part in chivalric games. As an answer to the European one, similar cartels were made from »Asia«, »Africa« and »America«. Competing knights, 8 for each continent, dressed in different costumes, represented different historical personalities. The cartels of those late chivalric games are, for the time being, the only known samples of this kind in our country.
