Proto-capitalism in traditional Chinese society

Abstract

The intention of the present study is to introduce the problem of the appearance of some forms of proto-capitalism in the old traditional Chinese society and to show how this problem is treated by contemporary Chinese historians. It also gives a more detailed description of the forms of proto-capitalism in the most developed part of the Chinese Empire — the Jiang-nan region ilustrated by some first-hand translations of documents from that period.
