Abstract

In the narrow town area villages adapted their economy to the growing needs of the town population. In the intermediate zone, dominated by freight horses, especially wine, salt, cereals and honey were transported. In the third zone, covering great distances between Hungary and Venice, beef as a self-transporting merchandise reached an average annual amount of 10,000 till (in particularly propitious years) more then 20,000 heads, while the total maximum need of the town of Venice came up to 22,000 oxen.
