Abstract

In order to gain insight into viewpoints, opinions, and prejudices of 19th century Slovenes concerning other nations the best data is available in periodicals, correspondence, diaties, memoirs, and also in literature. It is true, however, that all of the above reveal opinions of educated people or of prominent members of leading political parties, and less those of common, uneducated people. When dealing with this subject it is imperative to avoid rash and superficial judgements. Valuations are often extremely complex, and individual opinions many times contradict each other. It is especially important to draw one's attention to regional differences. The article refers mainly to circumstances in Slovene Carniola and Styria, and does not consider the Primorsko (Littoral) region and its characteristics which were sometimes of considerable importance.
