Abstract

  • The author deals with not numerous Slovene literary texts in which the French Revolution appears as a motive, thematic or formal element of their literary-aesthetic structure. In the years 1789—1799 examples of such texts are Linharts adaptation of Beaumarchais's comedy »Le marriage de Figaro« and the poems of popular poets; in the romantlc period Prešern's »Zdravljica« (Toast) and after 1848 Jenko's national »anthem« »Naprej« (Onward); in the period of Slovene Modernists Cankar's impressionistic novelette »Spomladanska noč« (Springtime Night), and in the years 1944—1962 Mrak's Revolutionary tetralogy. The analysis of those texts points out to the fact that the Slovene literary reception of the French Revolution was not only differentiated, but that it was also profoundly changing, deepening and problematizing through the mentioned periods.
