Abstract

Considered is a representative body of articles published in the »New York Times«, »Time«, »The Nation«, and the »New Republlc« respectivelly. Also outlined are main characteristics of British and Soviet media coverage of the issue. While the British press upheld the ethnic aspect, thus subsiding ideological dimension, the American press has as early as in May 1945 pioneered the view which clearly proposed that the Trieste question was not a mere land dispute, but rather the first local-level contest of power between the East and the West. The »modus informandi« was influenced by the fact that ali reporting on Trieste events was subject to the most rigorous allied censorship ever experienced on the territory of Italy.
