Schooling, Upbringing, and Education of Ljubljana Diocese Priests Before the Council of Trient

Abstract

The author first writes about the knowledge necessary for ordination, about the schools in Camiola in which it was possible to obtain elementary education, and especially about the educational center of the diocese. This is followed by an analysis of the percentage of priests enrolled in the universitv, and the ones with academic education; the sample group consists of 172 persons. The results of this analysis do not differ significantly from the results pertaining to Central and Westem Europe. A special chapter is dedicated to books as the means of spreading education in an informal manner, while the last chapter stresses the relativity of judgements about the (poor) education of priests; especially toward the end of the period dealt with in the article these judgements tended to be tinted by religous conflicts.
