Abstract

The study of place names on the territory of Trieste spread out during a tense period of highest nationalistic struggles here: the result is a tendentious picture, without respect to scientific methods, which tends to prove that all place names are of Slavic or Roman origin. Historical objective reasons and mystification — political or cultural — make it difficult to solve the problem even today, when Italian and Slovene scholars are trying to state the origin of names, avoiding tendentiousness, on purely historical and linguistic bases.
