Abstract

The contribution treats mostly the connection of the Slovene peasant clothes with the national movement in the time dealt with. Due to the materials and appearance, not being influenced by the contemporary fashion, the Slovene peasant clothes were considered at that time the Slovene cultural element and also one of the Slovene characteristics. Towards the end of the 19th century such clothes were worn by some nationally conscious citizens on festive occasions; they were followed by individual peasants who kept their up till then festive clothes. Between the World Wars the Germans in Slovenia were sometimes wearing the »Styrian costume« as expression of their appurtenance to the German nationality and connection with the Third Reich.
