Abstract

The article analyses ancient historical records (Velleius Paterculus, Annaeus Florus, Cassius Dio, and Tacitus) on the clades Variana focusing on the historical facts, the characterization of Varus and Arminius and the interpretations of the battle given in these texts within the context of their historical background and their author’s historiographical, political and ethical intentions. In relation to the recent archaeological finds at Kalkriese/Germany – the first site of the clades Variana which provides archeological results – the historical value of the records in general is questioned and especially concerning the problem of the location of the battle.
