Abstract

Reconstructing the conditions of settling down in Pannonia, as presented in 1979 by J. Šašel, the author went into details and defmed precisely such conditions in the southern Pannonian province called Savia. In the manuscripts of the 6th century the name of the province appeared as Suavia (originating from the people Suavi respectively Suevi). Therefor the author came to the conclusion that the changes were caused by setting down of Suavs (Suevs), which is supposed to have been legally regulated on reestablishment of Roman rule in Pannonia after decline of Atila's state. In the čase of the group 'antiqui barbari' at Cassiodorus, it is about a group of Suebs, who came to the Roman territorv in about 400. This group gave the province Savia a new name Suavia (the country of Suebs).
