Abstract

The article focuses on the position of Slovenes living in Zone A of the Free Territory of Trieste on the solution of the Trieste question. Their general opinion was that the Free Territory of Trieste was the only option that would protect them from Italian assimilation and should therefore be put into effect. They were therefore very reluctant to accept provisions of the 1954 London Memorandum of Understanding according to which the Free Territory of Trieste was divided between Italy and Yugoslavia and, as a consequence, Italians could reclaim Zone A.
