The paper deals especially with the following issues: the problems of the unsolved national question in the old Yugoslavia as the reason for the division of the state by the occupying forces, the policy and actions of the National Liberation Movement in solving the national question in 1941-1945, the formation of the different national leaderships during the National Liberation War, the first and second session of the AVNOJ and the formation of the federation in the last stage of the war.
