Reflections on Raj- šter’s chocolate, candy, and confections factory in Šoštanj

Abstract

In the 1920s, Šoštanj boasted a chocolate, candy, and confections factory founded and led by Josip Rajšter. Having engaged in confectionery industry since 1912, Rajšter officially established the factory in 1919; he continuously modernized it and expanded its production, employed a growing number of workers, and increased the sales. The story of success came to a surprising and relatively sudden end with the registration of debt settlement proceedings in 1924. Josip Rajšter and his family left Šoštanj in 1925, after they had established themselves as one of the pioneers of the town’s rich confectionery tradition.
