Part of a broad-based study on the population change in Šoštanj, the contribution tentatively presents the religious, linguistic, and national composition of the population of Šoštanj and the Šalek Valley, based on the population censuses conducted between the second half of the nineteenth century and the Second World War. The quantitative analysis of the data obtained in Šoštanj and the Šalek Valley during the period concerned also provides answers to questions concerning the religious, linguistic, and national composition of the population compared to the wider Slovenian territory. For the sake of a better understanding and comparability, the research is in part expanded to include the parish of St. Michael and the Šalek Valley.
