Abstract

In terms of its substance the paper may be divided into two parts: in the first the author briefly outlines the evolution and significance of the Hallstein Doctrine (1955) through which the Federal Republic of Germany proclaimed herself to be the one and only representative of the German people, threatening a breach of diplomatic relations to the states that might officially recognize the German Democratic Republic; in the second part events are described (1956/57) that had led towards the first instance in which the Doctrine was actually applied in relations with Yugoslavia, on the 19th October, 1957.
